"Bridging Boundaries: An International Journey from Nepal to China and Beyond"
In 2015, somebody told me that the most challenging thing in this world is to learn the Chinese language. It’s a misconception of ordinary people that the Chinese language has no alphabets and it's very difficult to master this language. China is a neighbouring country of Nepal but we were very little known to China, Chinese Language and Culture. Right at that time, a thought came to my mind why not try to learn the Chinese language? At that time I was a university student, I had my class in the morning and also had a part-time job in the daytime. I started asking my friends and started learning about my northern neighboring country. Later I learned about “特里布万大学-国际语言学院” where we can learn the Chinese Language and join various Cultural Activities. I enrolled in the International Language School immediately and this is how my journey to Chinese Language begins.
In 2018, I graduated from Tribhuvan University, and we used to have a dream that after we graduate many companies will come to the university and select the right candidate for the Job opportunity. But for Nepalese students, this kind of opportunity is very rare and could only happen in movie scenes. Most Nepalese Students fly abroad for better career and those who stay in Nepal also receive very less job opportunities. But In my case, such a dreamy filmy scene happens to come true. I got a job opportunity at Hongshi Shivam Cement, which is the Largest Cement Manufacturing Company in Nepal and also the largest FDI Project from China to Nepal after Nepal joined the Belt and Road Initiative in 2017. This is how my journey to working with Chinese enterprises begins.
In 2019, I joined the esteemed Central University of Finance and Economics (CUFE) to pursue a Master's Degree in International Business. The journey was made possible through the support of the Chinese Government Full Scholarship, a prestigious opportunity that has been a driving force in shaping my career. Receiving the Chinese Government Scholarship was a turning point in my academic and professional life. It opened doors to world-class education, cross-cultural experiences, and the opportunity to contribute to the global landscape. This Scholarship was accredited based on my prior Knowledge of the Chinese language and working experience in Nepal’s Largest cement manufacturing company Hongshi Shivam Cement Company which is Nepal’s First Foreign Direct Investment From China after Nepal joined the Belt and Road Initiative in 2017.
The scholarship not only provided financial support but also fostered a deep connection with China and its people. It was a testament to the Chinese government's commitment to international cooperation and fostering global understanding. The impact of this scholarship on my career is immeasurable, as it enabled me to achieve academic excellence and prepare for a future filled with international opportunities.
At CUFE, I immersed myself in a dynamic academic environment that exposed me to a world of learning. The professors at CUFE were not just educators but mentors who guided me through the complexities of international business. Their expertise, combined with the diversity of my fellow students, created a rich tapestry of knowledge. One of the beautiful times at CUFE was my opportunity to sharpen my Chinese language which helped me to become proficient in both Business Chinese and English. This skill has played a pivotal role in bridging communication gaps between colleagues and departments while working for a Chinese Company.
After my Graduation In 2021, I take off for the next chapter of my journey by joining Sichuan Investment Group, Nepal Hydro Joint Development and Investment Company. This Company is developing three Cascade Hydropower projects in the Marsyangdi River of the Gandaki Region having a capacity of 600 MW. In my role as Communication and Translator position of the Department of General Administration, I've had the privilege of working closely with Chinese colleagues. This experience has been an exciting journey of collaboration and cross-cultural engagement. I've witnessed firsthand the strength of Chinese enterprises and the impact of their investments in Nepal.
"The Belt and Road Initiative" has received worldwide attention since it was proposed in 2013. 0ver the last decade, we have clearly seen that China is pursuing "the Belt and Road Initiative" as a framework and foundation for common prosperity, more than for its own development. China's unprecedented achievements in economic and technological realms, and "the Belt and Road Initiative", offer a wide range of opportunities for Nepal.
Because of the financial and technological gaps, the rich resources of Nepal are still in a dormant stage. One visible example of untapped potential to develop is hydropower. Most of the rivers in Nepal originate from the high Himalayas and sharply descend onto the flat land within a short vertical distance. Due to this feature of river flow, Nepal has a huge potential to produce clean hydro-energy. Theoretically, Nepal can produce more than 80, 000 MW power out of which around 1600 MW a mere 2% of theoretical capacity) has been harnessed till now. A similar gap, in spite of a different magnitude, lies in building physical infrastructure like railways, highways, airports, sewerage systems, municipal waste management, meeting and conference venues, irrigation, and water supply. These are some areas where Nepal is still waiting for Foreign Investment.
In conclusion, my journey from Nepal to China and beyond has been a remarkable odyssey of growth and transformation. It all began with the curiosity to learn the Chinese language, and that decision opened doors to a world of opportunities. From my academic experience at CUFE to working closely with Chinese colleagues and the life-changing experience of the Chinese Government Scholarship, each chapter of this journey has left a remarkable footprint on my career. As I continue to bridge boundaries and contribute to Chinese enterprises in Nepal, I am driven by the belief in the power of international collaboration and the shared prosperity brought forth by initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative. The world is more interconnected than ever, and I remain committed to exploring new horizons and building bridges that unite nations, cultures, and dreams.
