摘要:
We provide an endogenous growth model that characterizes the distinct roles of artificial intelligence (AI) and the brain in innovation process of production technology. The innovation process consists of two sequential stages: (1) AI-driven refinement of existing knowledge and (2) creative thinking of the brain using this refined knowledge. In a baseline model with exogenous AI technology, faster AI growth leads to a higher growth rate of per capita consumption (analogous to production technology) and a higher fraction of labor allocated to R&D. Although faster AI growth eases the brain's knowledge burden, it also reduces knowledge spillovers because of selectively discarding knowledge. We also find that AI may make innovation easier or harder. Furthermore, we extend our analysis with an endogenous AI innovation model, deepening insights into the roles of AI and the brain in upstream and downstream innovation, as well as economic growth.
